CASE STUDY:

Bring the Stations of the Cross to Life

A crowdfunding campaign with multiple accompanying digital assets, website maintenance, and cirriculum development

Two years after the 30 years of business celebration with Karen Brodie Designs, my most recent collaboration with my mother, Karen, involves her creation of The Stations of the Cross in vibrant textile art. Between 2009 and 2024 Karen has undertaken the design of the 14 Stations of the Cross, a mini-pilgrimage of Jesus’ journey from condemnation by Pilate to the Cross. The next phase of this project was to bring all 14 illustrations to life in full fabric art, as seen in the adjacent example.

To help launch this initiative, it’s been my pleasure to create the campaign video for the project above, as well as design and build the website for the Stations fundraising platform. Now, after completing all 14 pieces of art in 2025, this journey continues as Karen plans to tour them in multiple international exhibits for all to experience, regardless of spiritual denomination.

An evolving project

One of the challenges of this creative endeavor was the continuous evolution of the project phases. Initially, we did a very intentional Fundraising Launch, which included an in-person event within Karen’s community. Eventually, we knew our outreach needed to be wider than our inner network, and so the website became a digital space that was updated throughout the year.

Mostly, it served as a crowdfunding platform, with additional photographs of the designs in their illustrated form and little behind-the-scenes content for supporters, including a blog. Overall, the website experienced about 3 major iterations throughout 2025, each reflecting a different message and focus with the fundraising endeavors, and then eventually spreading information about the upcoming exhibitions where the artwork would be installed once complete.

Building a following

When it came to storytelling for Karen’s project, the direction was easy: a deeply moving project that was inspired in 2009 will finally be brought to life in its anticipated final form of fabric art. The catch? This is a deeply spiritual story.

How do you capture the anticipation and the support of onlookers who may have judgments or reservations about the church? How do you explain that yes, the subject matter is faith-based and is a liturgical story, but the experience of the artwork is open to all peoples, no matter their background.

When creating our marketing materials for newsletters and social media, we didn’t want to remove the transparency of this project and its origins. In fact, Karen Brodie Designs already has a large clientele following that we could capitalize on. However, we put in extra work to make sure this project was accessible to everyone without the layer of spirituality being a barrier or a turnoff.

Event Spaces and Curriculum Development

Aside from fundraising, one of the main projects alongside the creation of the Stations of the Cross is a quiet day retreat that Karen has been hosting as part of this Stations journey. Now in its third year of iterations, moving from digital space to an intimate group setting, these events required two lanes of assets made for their promotion and setup:

  • Graphic design assets made to advertise the events, both in digital and print formats

  • Website pages and/or Eventbrite sites made to process registrations and funds

Each year, we have altered the event to have a slightly different theme; this mirrors the evolving depth of the project itself, but also allows for a renewed look and tone. In 2026, the event took take place in-person at the Il Museo Gallery in which the finished artwork lives, giving us greater opportunity to advertise directly within the Lower Mainland where the gallery is located. Nearly 20 participants took part in the 2026 retreat.
